Leadership needs theology

No leadership model can realize its visions for life and community without a solid theological foundation that connects the reality of biblical revelation, historical experience, a proper view of the human person, and sound cultural exegesis. This means having or developing a solid theology of leadership.

We need a deeper understanding of leadership of a community or an organization from a biblical (and holiness) worldview, especially in the evangelical world. In the face of increasing cultural pressure, rapid economic and population growth, expanding opportunities, and increasing religious plurality, it is far too easy for leadership to be driven by pragmatism rather than an objective, transcendent vision for human reality.

Pragmatic leadership may seem noble and necessary in the short run, but such leadership is reactive and short-sighted. Of greater value and significance is leadership that aims at being culturally transformative in light of a biblical vision of human society. God’s creative vision for humanity is the basis for any and all forms of human organizational enterprise, including business, political, cultural, and family. Leadership void of good theology is ultimately incomplete.
